But to be successful, I need to do the thing I don’t want to do, stop eating junk food.This sounds easy, but it’s not. I don’t want to stop eating junk food. For example, I want to lose some weight. About doing the things I don’t like doing to get the success I want. It’s easy to implement and should have a noticeable result at the end of that time.So, the big question is what other things should I do that “failures” don’t like to do? This will require some more contemplation.I am not a naturally optimistic person. Now, a habit like this won’t be easy, but it’s worth trying for a month. I tend to snack late at night while watching TV or playing games. It would appear if I skip breakfast and don’t eat after 8pm, I will generally eat a sufficient, but not excessive, number of calories. However, there is something special about turning the page on a year.As we enter this new year, I have some New Year hopes. I’m sure I could list several legitimate causes, but this would not help or change anything.I typically do not make New Year resolutions, as they are rarely effective. Many of the good habits of 2019 were forgotten or reversed in 2020. Just skimming my journal over the first couple of months of 2020 showed all the projects completed and challenges overcome.It was not an easy year. I hope to show more love to my family. I allowed myself to stress eat, snack much more than I wanted, and skip too many workouts. I hope to align my diet and exercise routines with my desire for a healthy and good looking physical form. Perhaps I can rediscover joy through the eyes of my children. I focus on the negative and don’t see the simple joys in front of me. I allow my whims and situations to guide my life, instead of applying the rudder of self control. I hope to be more intentional with my life. I’d like to say I was okay with all my plans changing and thoroughly enjoyed the additional time seeing my kids every day. I’d like to say I took the changes in stride. Just get it behind us and move on to something new, as if Januwill magically change everything.I’d like to say that I’d approached the year’s events with a calm and level-headed mindset. The truth is that like most people, I don’t like change, and I take out that dislike on the others around me. I have made them to myself and my closest friends. I also continue to contribute to the general stress level of the house with a less than positive attitude.Of course, I can make plenty of excuses for my behavior. Instead, I’ve gained 10 pounds, have more books to read, played more computer games than the three years before. I’d like to say I used the extra time to read my ever growing book queue.As you can probably guess, I can’t say any of these things. I need to live a little more in the present. I need to let things be without exerting control. I don’t know how they do it, unless practice helps or you eventually get numb to it.Where do we go from here? For me, I need to practice letting things go. There are people around the world who deal with this type of thing daily. Many of us with a comfortable amount of money aren’t use to life changes that money can’t fix.That’s the biggest issue, regardless of your opinion of the current health crisis: the effects impact a demographic that is use to being able to avoid many of the effects of life change. The difference is that in 2020, we have a catalyst for change that we can’t spend money to get around. I’m going to focus on the things I’m learning and the positive I’m experiencing. I’ll probably fail more than I succeed in the coming months before 2021.To help, I’m going to post more. I have years of practice trying to control my environment and being frustrated when things change even a little beyond my plans. Perhaps the cloth mask will work. Will I be wearing a mask when asked or required? Yes.First, I’m not an expert in infectious diseases. Americans concerned about the “government telling me what to do” or “this is a free country.”Do I believe simple cloth masks will protect me from getting sick or spreading germs? No, I don’t. How about you?There is much consternation over the recommendations or requirements to wear masks in public. It’s annoying sometimes, to be sure, but so are pants. It doesn’t greatly inconvenience me. As a matter of respect, I can wear a mask.Second, and this is the big one, what is the harm? So, I have to wear a mask for a while. What happens to pythons caught in floridaThat’s worthy.But just wearing masks themselves? This is not the hill on which to die. Let’s debate and fix that. Most of the country has laws requiring people to wear clothes in public, with jail time to enforce those laws.I acknowledge that in some parts of the country, mask wearing brings back older and much more complicated social issues and injustices. It’s not the same, but it’s better than nothing.The most difficult part for me in this situation is calculating the risk of harm to me, my family, and my friends. I’m thankful for the technology to allow video chats and phone calls when in person meetings are not advised. Added to that, since humans are social creatures, collectively cutting ourselves off from other people is hard. How to deal with the sickness? Does social distancing work? Should all gatherings be cancelled, not just over 100 or 50 or 10? What’s the risk to children? How does working from home work? Is anything good on Netflix?There are a lot of questions. So, put on a mask and find a worthy hill.As the world locks down in the face of COVID-19, one is forced to think about things. However, I have neither the time nor the energy to do so.Therefore, I have to lean on public officials and trusted medical sources. I know that if I spent the time digesting the known information, I’d have a better chance at risk analysis.
